Origin of the name: The origin of the name "Wirehaired Pointing Griffon" derives from the basic description of the dog. The word "griffon" generally means wire-haired, but the word "Griffon" was commonly used to describe several terrier-like breeds that originated in Belgium and France, such as the Brussels Griffon.

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon History and Origin: The country of origin of the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon breed was in France during the 1800's. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is related to the German Pointer and the breed was developed by a Dutch breeder named Eduard Korthals (1851-1896) hence its other name, the 'Korthals Pointing Griffon'. Eduard Korthals was the son of a wealthy broker and ship owner. He was also a dog lover and wanted to develop a new sporting griffon dog that was suitable for hunters that travelled on foot and had the attributes and characteristics of retrievers and pointers. Eduard Korthals moved from Holland to Germany and continued his efforts to develop a new Gun Dog and added Spaniels and Otterhound to the mix.

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon History: It took Korthals 20 years to develop the new breed which he called the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon in his breed standard publication. The Griffon-Club was founded in the German city of Mainz in 1888. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon was an all round Gun dog, able to hunt small game, such as hare, rabbits and quail, over all terrains and in all weather conditions. Eduard Korthals was fortunate in his job of working as an agent for Duke of Penthievre, a grandson of French king Louis Philippe I. His job took him around the world, mixing with royalty and nobility, and he took every opportunity to promote his new Wirehaired Pointing Griffon breed.

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon was exported to the United States as a successful Bird Dog and officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1887. In 1890 Korthals was awarded the Golden Kaiser Medal for his work in creating a "hunt, point and retrieve" dog of exceptional quality. The American Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Association was formed in the 1980's with the aim of preserving the purity of the original breed.
