Origin of the name: The origin of the name "Thai Ridgeback" derives from its country of origin in Thailand. The word "Ridgeback" describes the distinctive ridge of hair along the dog's spine growing in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat.

Thai Ridgeback History and Origin: The country of origin of the Thai Ridgeback breed was in Thailand during the Ancient Times and was mainly used as a guard dog and for hunting in the eastern parts of Thailand. Descriptions of the Thai Ridgeback breed appeared in Thai documents written more than 350 years ago. Due to its geographic isolation the Thai Ridgeback is apure bred dog which has resulted in the Thai Ridgeback retaining most of its original natural instincts. The Thai Ridgeback were first imported to the United States in 1994 by Jack Sterling who discovered and acquired the breed by chance on a trip to Bangkok. Jack Sterling founded the American Thai Ridgeback Association in 1995 to promote the breed.
