Norwegian Buhund History and Origin: The country of origin of the Norwegian Buhund breed was in Norway during the Dark Ages during the 800's. The ancestors of the breed were the ancient spitz-type dogs of early antiquity, known as the Asian or Nordic breeds, wolf-like types of dogs that shared a similar heritage and ancestry. The Norwegian Buhund inherited the attributes and characteristics of the Spitz dogs including pointed ears and muzzle, a thick, dense coat and a highly distinctive high carried tail that curled up and over the dog's back.

The tough, hardy, Norwegian Buhund was one of the dogs used by the Vikings as watch dogs and to help them hunt small and even large game, including bear and wolves, and herd their livestock. The Vikings revered their dogs and archaeological digs have shown that the skeletons of dogs buried with Vikings, as protectors in the afterlife, were representative of the modern day Norwegian Buhund. The Vikings took their dogs on their travels to many countries where the dogs were adopted by the inhabitants. The  Norwegian Buhund breed remains popular in modern times. The Norwegian Buhund Club was formed in 1967 and was registered with the UK Kennel Club.
