Carolina Dog History and Origin: The country of origin of the Carolina Dog or the "American Dingo" was in America dating back to Ancient Times and is believed to be one of the first dogs that roamed North America with Native American Indians - also refer to the American Indian Dog. The ancient heritage of the primitive Carolina Dog dates back over 8000 years when dogs crossed the Bering Strait land bridge with Asian nomads. The Carolina Dogs were domesticated by Native Indian tribes in the American Deep South and was used as a watchdog, guard dog, herding dog and on hunting expeditions.

Ancient Native American rock art depicts dogs of similar physical appearance with the tribes.  Carolina Dogs was specifically bred in the 1800's as a hunting dog to help settlers hunt raccoons and wild hogs. The highly adaptable Carolina Dogs reverted to the wild and roamed and survived in the savannahs, swamps and forests of South Carolina and Georgia.

The discovery of the Carolina Dogs was made in the 1970's by Dr. I. Lehr Brisbin, a biologist studying wildlife at the Savannah River Ecology Lab, a remote field research center of the University of Georgia in Aiken, South Carolina. Research showed that the Carolina Dogs had similar physical traits DNA patterns for very primitive dogs such as the Australian Dingo and the Carolina Dogs became known as the American Dingo. The Carolina Dog was also fondly known as "Old Yaller" because of his yellowish coloring. Concerted efforts are being made to preserve the Carolina Dogs and they are now bred and kept in packs by specialized breeders. Some Carolina Dogs have been taken in by families who have found that they good, although shy, family pets.
