Other names for the Bedlington Terrier: The Bedlington Terrier is known by the nickname of the "Lamb-like Dog". Other names for this breed of dog include the Rothbury Terrier.

Origin of the name: The dog is named after the place it was originally bred in Bedlington is a market town situated in South East Northumberland, England. The origin of the word 'terrier' is derived from the Latin word 'terra' meaning "earth" as so many of the terrier breeds were originally bred and trained as hunting dogs to pursue their prey, such as rats, mice and badgers into their burrows and bolt holes.

Bedlington Terrier History and Origin: The country of origin of the Bedlington Terrier breed was in England during the 1800's. The breed is believed to have been developed during the early 1800's by Edward Collingwood at Dissington Hall, a country estate in Rothbury to produce a dog with an excellent hunting ability and its use to sportsmen as a gundog. The dog was called the Rothbury Terrier. In 1825, a man Joseph Ainsley from the nearby town of Bedlington called  mated a Whippet with the Rothbury dog, producing a dog he named "Piper", and called the new breed the Bedlington Terrier. (Rothbury is just 20 miles from the town of Bedlington). The Bedlington Terrier breed was described as having "the look of a lamb but the heart of a lion".

Despite its docile lamb-like appearance the Bedlington Terrier was used to hunt hare, rabbit, fox, vermin and badger above the ground but it could also work in water to hunt water rats and otters. The versatile dog was soon exported to the United States. Due to its prowess as a ratter the Bedlington Terrier was known to be used in the blood sport called Rat-baiting (refer to the history of the Rat Terrier). In 1877 a national breed association was established for the Bedlington Terrier in the UK. The Bedlington Terrier was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1886.

Bedlington Terrier Modern History: The modern history of the Bedlington Terrier moved on and this agile, sensitive breed is still used in hunting but also has an affectionate used as a family pet.
